Mountain States remembers Jim Watt

With deep sadness, we acknowledge the passing of James G. Watt, a respected figure and a significant contributor to Mountain States Legal Foundation. Jim—who served as the Secretary of the Interior during the Reagan Administration and played a vital role in shaping the Foundation—left an impact on its mission.

Under Jim’s leadership, Mountain States Legal Foundation advanced numerous initiatives and legal battles that defended the rights of individuals and promoted responsible land and resource management. His extensive knowledge of environmental policy and his legal acumen were invaluable in addressing the complex challenges the foundation and its supporters face. His unwavering commitment to these ideals was a guiding light for the Foundation and those who worked alongside him.

John Runft, a long-time member of the MSLF Litigation Advisory Council, said, “Jim Watt was one of a small group of fearless conservative leaders, who forged ahead while fully comprehending the circumstances and possible consequences.  Through his leadership Mountain States Legal Foundation was successfully launched in 1977 and quickly became a force to be reckoned with.  I was present at a board meeting in November of 1980 at the Phoenix Biltmore when President-elect Reagan called Jim to inform him that he was selected to serve as Secretary of the Interior, a real manifestation of his impact.  Accordingly, Jim courageously served as Regan’s “lighting rod” while at Interior, and he equally courageously faced the political consequences and related fallout.  A good man who had your back.”

Throughout his career, Jim demonstrated an unwavering dedication to public service and an unyielding commitment to the principles he held dear. His steadfast advocacy for property rights and his belief in the power of the individual inspired many, and his legacy will continue to resonate within Mountain States Legal Foundation and the broader community.

On behalf of Mountain States Legal Foundation, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Watt’s family, friends, and colleagues. We join them in mourning the loss of a remarkable individual whose contributions to the Foundation and this country will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.

May James G. Watt’s memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to those fortunate enough to have known him or benefited from his work.
