The mid-term elections are right around the corner. Next week, states and municipalities are asking major ballot questions, governors and state legislatures are up for grabs, and the balance of power in Congress is poised to change.

Mountain States is resolutely and firmly a non-partisan organization. We do not produce voting guides and we do not endorse candidates or specific policy measures. Why? The answer is not because of our IRS tax status. We’re non-partisan because the Constitution knows no party. We are committed to the principles of liberty and to restoring those natural rights enshrined in our national charter. Liberty is for everyone, and anyone can support it.

Of course, as defenders of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we can always encourage better ways to think about the world. As a former teacher, I prefer to help people think about the world by asking questions. If you happen to ask and answer the following questions next Tuesday, all the better.

  1. Does a politician or proposed policy increase bureaucratic accountability, or give regulators more authority over American citizens?
  2. Does a politician or proposed policy eliminate the outrageous and corrupt practice of “sue and settle,” or allow special-interest groups to collude with the government?
  3. Does a politician or proposed policy protect the water rights of ranchers and farmers, or allow the federal government more control over our land?
  4. Does a politician or proposed policy protect free speech regardless of content, or seek to silence those with views it considers bad?
  5. Does a politician or proposed policy fight for equality, or promote government-sponsored race discrimination?
  6. Does a politician or proposed policy uphold your right to keep and bear arms, or restrict your legal capacity to defend yourself and your loved ones?

We have a host of resources to help inform your research, and an informed citizenry is a powerful one. A powerful American citizenry keeps government limited.

Again, we won’t tell you how to vote, but we’ll help you understand the impacts of the decisions you face on the ballot as best we can.

Happy voting!
